Connect To Internet Via Wired Connection

· Using an Ethernet cord plug one end into an active Ethernet port and the other end into the machine that you are using (ie. Desktop/Laptop).

· Check to see if the machine has successfully connected by checking the internet icon in the bottom right hand of the screen in the task bar.

· If the internet has not connected via wired connection please consult these troubleshooting steps:

1. Checking the link lights on the back of the machine

Some machines come with two lights, one indicating a connection and another indicating network traffic. One light will be on continuously while the other one flashes, although if you see any lights on at all near the Ethernet port you are off to a good start.

2. Checking if the computer has an IP

Open an elevated Command Prompt by clicking the start menu, search for Command Prompt, right click Command Prompt in the search results, and click Run as Administrator. In the elevated command prompt, type “ipconfig” and hit enter. Then look at the results for the IPv4 Address.

3. Utilize “ipconfig /release” and “ipconfig /renew”

If you are still unable to connect to the internet, try releasing the old IP address and renewing it again. Type “ipconfig /release” in an elevated command prompt and hit enter to release the old IP address. Now type “ipconfig /renew” in the elevated command prompt and hit enter to renew the new IP address.

· Open Elevated Command Prompt (Type in Command Prompt into toolbar search and right click it and run as administrator).

· Type “ipconfig /release”

· Ensure the IPv4 address is gone from the list of information returned.

· Type “ipconfig /renew”

· Ensure the IPv4 address has returned to the list of information.

4. Check to see if the IP is assigned statically or automatically

You can check to see if your computer’s IP is assigned automatically or statically by following the file path: Control Panel> >View By Small Icons >Network and Sharing Center> Change Adapter Settings> (right click) Ethernet> Properties> (left click) Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)> Properties. The results should look like the picture seen below.

Note: Most foundation users obtain their IP address automatically, while some do obtain their IP address by manually typing it in. You can manually enter your IP address by clicking the option “Use the following IP address” and entering it into the field called IP address.
